Apollo

We have been having alot of issues with Apollo since our move, but things seem to be getting better now. After we moved it really freaked him out, and every time we would leave him alone, he would panic and destroy doors, mini blinds, door frames, and anything he could get to basically. He would also poop on the floor and dump his water and food bowl and scatter the food around the whole room! I think he was showing us that he was mad at us by doing the food thing! lol Anyways, we couldn't do it anymore. He has caused alot of damage to this house already that we will have to pay back. We cant put him in the backyard cause he can easily jump the fence, which he as done several times, and he hurts himself on his cable every time we try that. So our last resort was a kennel to put him in while we are gone. He is still afraid of it, but he has been going in it pretty easy for me. I always give him a treat when he goes in there like he is supposed to. I'm glad he is doing good, cause I didn't want to hurt myself or the baby trying to get him in there. So anyways, it seems to be our best solution. Only problem is now, we cant go anywhere for an extended period of time cause we cant leave him in there too long. Not sure what to do about that one. We will try to figure something out though. Right now, he is sleeping on the floor with his stuffed duck! lol

Poor dog! It is too bad you couldn't have done the dog crate when he was a puppy, but he's still young I'm sure he'll get used to it. We crate trained Sam, and I don't think I'd ever have another dog that I didn't crate train. We put Sam in one while we were gone so he would stay quiet. We put a soft bed in the bottom of it for him, and maybe if he's close to a particular person in your family like you are David get an old t-shirt wear it so it gets your smell, and then let him have it in his crate with him. He might feel more calm and less alone. Unless he's freaking out I wouldn't worry about him being in it for long peiods of time. Zach had a black lab and they kept her in a crate all day while they were at work/school. Hope it works out! Sorry for writing a novel!

I'm so excited for the new baby to come!

He'll get better with the crate, it'll just take time since he wasn't crate trained as a puppy. We could leave Drake in the crate while we were at work when he was a pup and he did fine, but he wasn't ever in it more than 8 hours. If they are in it too long and hold their urination it can cause kidney issues too.
When you go to family for the holidays will he be with you or are you leaving him home?

He will be staying here, but this holiday season we are just going to Blue Springs for no more than five to six hours, so we should be good there. I was wanting to go to Davids graduation next month, but thats not going to be able to happen since we cant leave him in there that long. I do feel like things are getting alot better though. He is a good dog, just got stressed out with the move. When we are home he is just fine.

gotta love the spirit of labs!

have you thought about boarding him when you travel? at least that way you won't have to worry about him and you won't feel like you can't ever leave

I agree with Jen, check and see if you have anyone out there to border him with. He might not like it the first few times, but if he know's you will come back for him he'll adjust to it after a few trips. I'm glad he is doing better. I think every kid deserves to have a lab in their lives. They are just awesome animals!

Well the idea of bordering Apollo is a good idea if you have the $$$ to do that! And I know with three little girls their needs come first above the dog. So boarding is pretty much out of the picture for you guys! Hopefully the holding pen you are going to get after the first of the year will help you guys!
